Markus Wiehler

My name is Markus Wiehler andI am a contemporary witness. I was born in 1968 and spent a typical childhoodin the former communist GDR. I was without a political conviction untilpolitics changed my life. As an acrobatics-student I used the chance to escapeduring an acrobats-festival in Paris in 1988. After the escape I lived in WestBerlin and got to know the capitalistpart of the city. Being in West Berlin I experienced the special moment whenthe wall came down and when the two parts of Germany were
reunified in 1989. I still work as an acrobat and now as a tourist guide aswell. I live in an old building in Berlin-Mitte, in the district where I wasborn. At the moment I can witness the gentrification in my neighbourhood. Newshops come and go and I know all of them. I still know every secret in thecorners of my home district. I am still part of the acrobatic and eventcommunity.
