Markus Wiehler – Contemporary Witness, Former Performer, City Guide by Passion

Born in 1968 in East Berlin, I experienced a typical childhood in the German Democratic Republic — until politics changed my life as well, when my best friend was sentenced to one year in prison for attempting to escape across the Berlin Wall.

From 1984 to 1988, I trained as an acrobat in East Berlin. In January 1988, while still a student, I seized the opportunity during an acrobatics competition in Paris to make a spectacular escape to West Berlin together with three of my colleagues.

I spent 35 years on stage before ending my career as a performer in 2019. Today, I guide people through my city — with a special focus on the history of the Berlin Wall, which I know not from books, but from personal experience.

My particular area of expertise is also Berlin-Mitte — my original neighborhood, where I still live today. I don’t just show the city’s well-known highlights, but also hidden spots, courtyards, and forgotten traces of the GDR era, the wild 1990s, and modern Berlin.

Experience Berlin with a true contemporary witness.

Falko Hennig

Falko Hennig, born in 1969 in Berlin, the capital of the GDR, was a Young Pioneer, a member of the FDJ, and trained as a typesetter.

Before the fall of the Wall, he escaped to West Germany and later returned to East Berlin. Falko is a writer, journalist, footballer, radio host, and since the early 1990s a city guide. His career as a Berlin guide began with sightseeing tours in a Trabant Kübelwagen, the type used by border guards in the death strip.

In addition to tours of the most famous sights and the Wall, he offers tours on literary and historical topics, e.g. about Kafka, Chaplin, Einstein, and Mark Twain in Berlin. Falko is the founder of the Charles Bukowski Society and plays football in the “National Team of Writers.”

He is a columnist for the Berliner Zeitung, where he writes about swear words and Berlin history. He was a punk, a squatter, a vagrant, has two adult daughters, and lives in Berlin in a books-filled apartment.
